whale carcass washed up. People actually had a memorial for it.

 Dead whale

The whale received a memorial send-off from resident Jenna Mahina and other bystanders who brought flowers and read D.H. Lawrence’s poem, “Whales Weep Not,” during a short ceremony Sunday.

“I felt a kinship with the whale’s spirit,” said Mahina who saw the whale come in and called the Marine Mammal Center. “I felt like I needed to do something for it.”
